The analysis of our self-examination by God’s word should rise or fall in these aforementioned Scriptures and others like them. In I Peter 4:4 the word of God says there should be evidence clearly in view for your friends and acquaintances to make them think it is strange that you no longer run with them to the excesses of partying and evil practices. As they see the absence of these practices in your life, they will speak evil of you.
In this matter of the love of the truth, in the context of self-examination, each individual who claims to be in the faith may argue against what God has said. But these verses from 2 Peter 3:16-17 say “many” wrestle or twist the Scripture to their own destruction and in so doing are led away from the truth into the error of the wicked. These who lead and are led away by this perversion of Scripture are by implication carrying a Bible under their arm from which they are twisting and perverting Scripture to their own destruction while contributing to the error of others. The love of the truth is the key to procuring the inheritance of peace and joy that is promised to us now and after we are taken into eternity with the Lord.
Take care, in examination, lest we be numbered as one of that group of “many” who fall short of the grace of God, because when they heard the word of truth it was not mixed with faith. There is a rest to the people of God who trust in the savior’s finished work to deliver them into the promises God has set before us. We who embrace Truth must believe that even the faith we have is the gift of God. We have a responsibility to study the Scripture and increase that faith. Faith comes by hearing and it is only by the word of God that hearing of the truth exists in our minds.
I will close with a quote from A. W. Tozer from his book The Knowledge of The Holy. He writes “the Scriptures not only teach truth, they show also its uses for mankind. The inspired writers were men of like passion with us, dwelling in the midst of life. What they learned about God became to them a sword, a shield, a hammer; it became their life motivation, their good hope, and their confident expectation.” May we all develop the same mindset from the same source, the holy Scripture.
